Strategy in Preventing Dental Caries Incidence

| 16.4.12
Dental examination should be performed every 6 months.
Dental x-rays can be done every 12-36 months, depending on the results of dental examinations by a dentist.

Five general strategies that are key in preventing dental caries:

A. Maintaining oral hygiene.
Good oral hygiene includes brushing your teeth before or after breakfast and before bed at night and clean the plaque with flossing (flossing) every day. It is very effective in preventing decay of the slippery surface.
Brushing your teeth to prevent caries formation on the edge of your teeth and flossing do in between teeth that can not be reached by a toothbrush.
A good brushing teeth requires time for 3 minutes.
At the beginning of plaque rather soft and can be removed with a soft bristled toothbrush and floss your teeth at least every 24 hours. If the plaque has hardened it will be difficult to clean.

2. Food.
All carbohydrates can cause tooth decay, but the most evil is sugar.
All simple sugars, including table sugar (sucrose), sugars in honey (levulose and dextrose), fruit (fructose) and milk (lactose) has the same effect on teeth.
If sugar joined the plaque, then within about 20 minutes, the bacterium Streptococcus mutans in plaque to produce acids.
The amount of sugar you eat is not the problem, which plays an important role is the length of the sugar was in the teeth.

People who are prone to caries should reduce sugary foods.
Rinsing the mouth after eating sugary foods will eliminate the sugar, but a more effective way is by brushing your teeth.
To avoid the formation of dental caries, you should drink beverages with artificial sweeteners or drink tea or coffee without sugar.

3. Fluor.
Fluor led to the teeth, especially email, is resistant to acids that cause caries formation.
Fluoride is very effective at taking the teeth are growing and harden, ie until the age of 11 years.
The addition of fluoride in water is the most efficient way to meet the needs of fluoride in children. But if too much fluoride, can cause spots or discoloration of the teeth.
If you drink water containing little fluorine, can be given the drug sodium fluoride drops or tablets.
Fluorine can also be applied directly by dentists in teeth prone to decay.
It would be better if you use toothpaste that contains fluoride.

4. Fillings.
Patching can be used to protect the grooves on the back teeth are hard to reach.
Once cleaned, the area to be patched closed with liquid plastic. Once the plastic hardens the liquid, will form an effective barrier, where bacteria in the grooves will stop producing acid because food can not reach the groove.
A long lasting fillings; about 90% survived to 1 year and 60% survive to 10 years, but sometimes necessary to repair or replacement.

5. Antibacterial therapy.
Some people have the bacteria that cause spoilage are very active in his mouth.
Parents can pass the bacteria to her child through kissing. Bacteria grows in the child's mouth after the first tooth erupts and then can lead to caries. Because of this tendency that tooth decay occurs in a family, does not necessarily indicate oral hygiene and bad eating habits.

In people who tend to suffer from dental caries should be given antibacterial therapy.
After the decayed area was removed and patched all the holes and grooves, then given a strong mouthwash (chlorhexidine) for several weeks to kill the bacteria in plaque is left. It is expected that no harmful bacteria will replace the bacteria that cause caries.
To help control the bacteria, can be used daily fluoride mouthwash and chewing gum containing xylitol.
