An Introduction To Dentists' Instruments

| 25.1.12

One of the most important parts of your body to keep in good, healthy shape is your mouth. Your mouth is where all of your food and drink are ingested, and so to do this comfortably with no pain your mouth needs to be in great condition. This is where dentists come in. A dentist is a doctor of the mouth, who examines, treats and manipulated the teeth, gums and mouth to make sure that your mouth looks healthy and functions properly. The things that every dentist needs are their dentists instruments. Dentists instruments allow them to properly do their job as easily and quickly as possible.

The most common dentists instruments are the mirror and the probe. The probe is also known as a dental explorer, or a sickle probe. This, combined with the mirror are the most effective ways of doing a check up on someone's teeth. The mirror has an angle just before the surface which allows the dentist to see all around the different teeth from the outside of the mouth, and with the sickle probe the dentist is able to poke around the teeth to make sure that there are no cavities or loose teeth around the mouth.

There are also many other dentists instruments that are used in the practice. The dentists instruments used depend on what procedure is taking place and how it is being done. For example, if there is something that needs to be applied to the teeth, the dentist will use a tool which supplies concentrated compressed air, drying the teeth very quickly.

For any sort of procedure where there is being something removed or put in, a local anaesthesia is used. This is one of the dentists instruments that almost completely relieves pain inside the mouth. This is implemented by an injection to the gums around the area of work, which makes the area go numb, allowing the dentist to complete their work without the patient squirming because of the pain.

The local anaesthesia is used for fillings, where the dentist has to use a dental drill to make a hole in the tooth before inserting the filling. A filling is when there is a hole in one of the back teeth that needs to be filled in, as this often exposes nerve endings causing pain and discomfort. Without the local anaesthesia this procedure would hurt a lot, as drilling into a tooth is something that causes a lot of pain. These drills are often combined with a small vacuum cleaner like tool, which prevents any particles of tooth from lying around the mouth and possible getting swallowed, causing pain and discomfort in the throat.

For some patients, they are unable to keep their mouth open properly when a dentist is doing work on their teeth, this is when a cheek, tongue or lip retractor is used. This holds these parts of the mouth open or away from where the working is taking place, allowing the dentist to get on with his job as quickly as possible, causing the least amount of pain and discomfort.
