Being an assistant requires you of having undergone a dental assistant training for it is very important in a dental office. The training must equip the students well enough. The training usually runs to almost a year. And the course is not just educating the students through theories or by making them able to know what the signs and symptoms of illnesses and diseases and having them informed of the dental terms but also providing them the ability and understanding through hands-on learning or training. Within the course they are brought into dental facilities that will enable them to practice. They are brought to these facilities and are being taught how to use particular equipment such as the amalgamator, dental units and chairs, model trimmers, oral evacuation equipment, ultrasonic and X-ray units. They are also being equipped to use medical devices to keep patients' mouths dry and clear. They are taught how to perform some minor procedures such as removing sutures and applying cavity-preventive agents or topical treatments.





An Assistants Duties





The role of a dental assistant is very essential in running a dental clinic or firm. This training prepares the students to become effective dental assistants. Dental assistants are good communicators. They are the ones who keep the patients comfortable and obtain information during their appointments with the dentist. They give assistance to the dentist as dental procedures and laboratory procedures are done. They keep the equipment and the facilities in good condition by sterilizing each equipment and instrument. They make casts of patients' teeth and create temporary crowns. They also keep the patients' records; take responsibility of the billings and receiving the payments and ordering supplies, and tracking the inventory.





Future Jobs of an Assistant





The assistant can work in dental clinic or facility individually with one dentist or with a group of dental practitioners having partnership with dentists and dental firms. An assistant may also serve as sales representatives taking dental products to consumers, dentists and other businesses. They may also become instructors in dental assisting courses in different colleges or universities. They may handle hospital dental facilities and treat patients admitted to the hospital. They may also work for highly specialized dental practices such as pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, etc. They could also work as agents for insurance companies. Also, they could work in dental clinics, hospitals and school clinics. They could also take part in educating students in public schools regarding preventive dental care.





Earnings





An assistant may earn much depending on their skills and credentials and on the state they are located and specifically on which firm they work for. In the year 2009, statistics shows that the median hourly rate in assisting is $15.98 resulting to a median annual estimate of $33,230.00 in the United States. This shows an increase in the earnings of assistants compared to 2004's median hour rate of $13.62. Aside from the monetary earnings, some assistants are also given dental coverage and other benefits. This could be one of the factors which contributed in the increase of the number of people taking up dental assistant training in different states.
